Royal Standard No.5
The Smith Premier No 2 typewriter has two full keyboards – one set for upper case and one set for lower case letters. This is an understroke typewriter whereby the slugs strike the platen from the underside making seeing what you type as you type very difficult.
The Smith Premier No 2 first appeared in 1896. No 2s ran from around 1896 through 1914.
The model shown in the images is dated to 1898 based upon the serial #. This was found at an Antique Dealer “Village Antique Mall”. Priced at $99, we were able to pick it up for $75. Still overpriced for a typewriter in this condition but a great find for a full restoration project (in the works).
It wasn’t until 1908 that Smith Premier introduced the No 10, the only full-keyboard front stroke typewriter ever made.
Prices are for reference when you’re buying and not necessarily a “For Sale” price.
